WHEREAS, the Cliff Walk was designated a National Historic Trail by the National Parks Department on August 7, 1975; and

the Cliff Walk is one of the most visited natural attractions in the State of Rhode Island, enticing over 500,000 site-seers annually to its winding terrain along rugged cliffs, with spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean on one side and vistas of opulent mansions on the other; and

WHEREAS,

on September 6, 2005, a groundbreaking ceremony held on the lawn of The Marble House marked the start of the second phase of a $3.5 million renovation project to protect and enhance the three and one-half miles of historic Cliff Walk; and

WHEREAS, City of Newport administrators and staff, members of the Cliff Walk Commission, and members of the City's Congressional and State Legislative Delegation worked for several years with representatives of the RI Department of Transportation to secure funding for this project; and

WHEREAS, when it was determined that additional funds were needed to complete the project, the RI Department of Transportation committed up to $1 million in additional funding to ensure completion of this most important restoration project. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT

RESOLVED: the Council of the City of Newport expresses gratitude and sincere thanks to the RI Department of Transportation, and especially to Director James R. Capaldi, Deputy Director Chuck Alves and Administrator of Contracts and Specifications Christos Xenophontos, for their dedication to the Cliff Walk Restoration Project and the City of Newport.
