Marine Avenue
The status of Marine Avenue as a public right of way or private street was a frequent topic of discussion when I served on the City of Newport's Cliff Walk Commission. Most Newporters can remember, as I do, a larger access area to the Cliff Walk. This resolution directs city administration to determine once and for all the extent of the public right of way along Marine Avenue.

It reads as follows:
WHEREAS,

Marine Avenue has consistently been an issue of debate for the City of Newport regarding public rights; and

WHEREAS,

the Cliff Walk Commission recommends Marine Avenue's status as a public right of way be established to ensure public access to one of the state's most scenic vistas; and

WHEREAS,

it is the responsibility of the City and City Council to bring this issue to a final conclusion. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT

RESOLVED: the City Administration and the Solicitor's Office come to a definitive determination regarding the public right of way on Marine Avenue and seek whatever remedy deemed necessary to resolve this debate conclusively.
