WHEREAS, On Monday, October 17, 2005 Senator Lincoln Chafee unveiled plans to submit two nominations for Newport to become a US destination on the World Heritage List, a designation that was created in 1972 by a United Nations treaty designed to identify sites whose outstanding values should be preserved for future generations; and

WHEREAS, Placement on this list would foster worldwide attraction to Newport in the international tourism market and the prestige of the designation would raise both the City of Newport’s and State of Rhode Island’s stature in the view of the rest of the country as only 812 sites of natural and/or cultural value around the world have been recognized; and

WHEREAS, Application to the World Heritage List is an arduous task taking anywhere from three to five years and Senator Chafee and his staff have worked on the City of Newport’s application for over two years;. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT

RESOLVED: The Newport City Council send its thanks and appreciation to Senator Chafee and his staff for their dedication to this project, recognition of Newport’s unique historical contributions including Newport’s place in history as the first city to provide for freedom of religion and freedom of expression recognized in "The Lively Experiment" nomination and significant architectural attributes which are recognized in "The Evolution of the 19th Century American Architecture" nomination. AND BE IT FURTHER.

RESOLVED: That the Newport City Council extend an offer to help, in any way possible, in securing this very important designation.
