WHEREAS, A Newport World Heritage Committee was formed two years ago to determine whether the City of Newport could effectively compete as a World Heritage site;and

WHEREAS, Designation by the United Nations as a World Heritage Site would foster worldwide attraction to Newport by the international tourism market and the prestige of the designation would raise both the City of Newport’s and State of Rhode Island’s stature in the view of the rest of the country as only 812 sites of natural and/or cultural value around the world have been recognized; and

WHEREAS, The Committee has spent many hours over the past two years consulting with bureaucrats, academicians, advocates and international experts to create not one but two applications to the World Heritage Commission on behalf of the City of Newport; and

WHEREAS, Those involved on this committee have already shown their dedication to the World Heritage List’s main mission by demonstrating outstanding values when it comes to preserving Newport’s unique historically and culturally important sites for future generations; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT

RESOLVED: The Newport City Council send its thanks and appreciation to members of this committee which includes
Co-Chairman Pieter Roos and Jonathan Stevens; Michael Balaban; Paige Bronk; Christine Callahan; Ralph Carpenter; Senator Lincoln Chafee; Trudy Coxe; Noreen Drexel; Mohammed Farzan; Ronald Lee Fleming; Cheryl Helms; Eric Hertfelder; Scott Loehr; Stuart McNaught; Michael Murray, Esq.; Marlaine Salafia; Ted Sanderson; Mary Sokolowski; Keith Stokes; Evan Smith; John Tschirch; Jo Yellis; Ken Yellis and Richard Youngken
For participation on this venture and for the spirit of collaboration they have expressed to this project and many others which have elevated the esteem of Newport as a world class destination; AND BE IT FURTHER
