Resolution 2005-49: Requesting the City Administration to Seek Grants for Business Owners for the Purchase of Outdoor Ashtrays

Similar to Resolution 2005-50, this resolution was created in response to the enactment of the March 2005 Smoking Ban. It looks to identify any resources that may be available so that local establishments may be provided with matching receptacles for cigarette butts in an effort to clearly identify the proper place for disposal of butts and cut down on street litter.

WHEREAS,
|
over the years the City of Newport has worked to reduce the amount of litter on city streets and sidewalks; and
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
WHEREAS, |
businesses have been called upon to regularly sweep and wash their sidewalks so that the City provides an aesthetically pleasing image to both residents and visitors; and
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
WHEREAS, |
as a result of the enactment of legislation prohibiting smoking in the workplace, a prohibition which this Council fully supports, there has been a noticeable increase in the amount of cigarette butts on city sidewalks and roadway gutters; and
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
|
WHEREAS, |
the Council of the City of Newport would like to provide assistance to businesses in maintaining the cleanliness of the outside areas of their businesses. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT
|

|
|
|
|
|
|
|
RESOLVED, |
that the City Administration, through the Clean Cities Program, seek grants to assist local businesses in purchasing attractive, sturdy cigarette ashtrays for in front of their establishments. |
